How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 43 ÷ 100 = 0.43
  2. Multiply: 0.43 × 15 = 6.45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.45 ÷ 15 × 100 = 43%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 43/100 = part/15, so part = 43 × 15 ÷ 100 = 6.45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =43%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.45 is the 43% share of 15. The remaining 57% is 8.55, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 43% off an item priced $15 saves $6.45, so you pay $8.55.

Adding and taking away 43%

Increasing 15 by 43% gives 21.45 and decreasing it by 43% gives 8.55. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 43% and then lowering the result by 43% ends at 12.2265, because the second 43% is taken of a bigger number.
