How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
  2. Multiply: 0.65 × 15 = 9.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.75 ÷ 15 × 100 = 65%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/15, so part = 65 × 15 ÷ 100 = 9.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.75 is the 65% share of 15. The remaining 35% is 5.25, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 65% off an item priced $15 saves $9.75, so you pay $5.25.

Adding and taking away 65%

Increasing 15 by 65% gives 24.75 and decreasing it by 65% gives 5.25. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 8.6625, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.
