How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
  2. Multiply: 0.16 × 80 = 12.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12.8 ÷ 80 × 100 = 16%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/80, so part = 16 × 80 ÷ 100 = 12.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =16%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12.8 is the 16% share of 80. The remaining 84% is 67.2, and the two parts add back up to 80.

Discounts: 16% off an item priced $80 saves $12.8, so you pay $67.2.

Adding and taking away 16%

Increasing 80 by 16% gives 92.8 and decreasing it by 16% gives 67.2. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 77.952, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.
