How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 17 ÷ 100 = 0.17
  2. Multiply: 0.17 × 70 = 11.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11.9 ÷ 70 × 100 = 17%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 17/100 = part/70, so part = 17 × 70 ÷ 100 = 11.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =17%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11.9 is the 17% share of 70. The remaining 83% is 58.1, and the two parts add back up to 70.

Discounts: 17% off an item priced $70 saves $11.9, so you pay $58.1.

Adding and taking away 17%

Increasing 70 by 17% gives 81.9 and decreasing it by 17% gives 58.1. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 17% and then lowering the result by 17% ends at 67.977, because the second 17% is taken of a bigger number.
