How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
  2. Multiply: 0.18 × 10 = 1.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.8 ÷ 10 × 100 = 18%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/100 = part/10, so part = 18 × 10 ÷ 100 = 1.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =18%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.8 is the 18% share of 10. The remaining 82% is 8.2, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 18% off an item priced $10 saves $1.8, so you pay $8.2.

Adding and taking away 18%

Increasing 10 by 18% gives 11.8 and decreasing it by 18% gives 8.2. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 18% and then lowering the result by 18% ends at 9.676, because the second 18% is taken of a bigger number.
