How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
- Multiply: 0.18 × 80 = 14.4
- Check: Work backwards: 14.4 ÷ 80 × 100 = 18%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/100 = part/80, so part = 18 × 80 ÷ 100 = 14.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =18%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
14.4 is the 18% share of 80. The remaining 82% is 65.6, and the two parts add back up to 80.
Discounts: 18% off an item priced $80 saves $14.4, so you pay $65.6.
Adding and taking away 18%
Increasing 80 by 18% gives 94.4 and decreasing it by 18% gives 65.6. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 18% and then lowering the result by 18% ends at 77.408, because the second 18% is taken of a bigger number.
