How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 19 ÷ 100 = 0.19
  2. Multiply: 0.19 × 60 = 11.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11.4 ÷ 60 × 100 = 19%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 19/100 = part/60, so part = 19 × 60 ÷ 100 = 11.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =19%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11.4 is the 19% share of 60. The remaining 81% is 48.6, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 19% off an item priced $60 saves $11.4, so you pay $48.6.

Adding and taking away 19%

Increasing 60 by 19% gives 71.4 and decreasing it by 19% gives 48.6. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 19% and then lowering the result by 19% ends at 57.834, because the second 19% is taken of a bigger number.
