How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 200 ÷ 100 = 2
- Multiply: 2 × 30 = 60
- Check: Work backwards: 60 ÷ 30 × 100 = 200%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 200/100 = part/30, so part = 200 × 30 ÷ 100 = 60. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =200%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 200% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 30: it is 2 times 30.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 200% of its $30 cost means selling it for $60.
Adding and taking away 200%
Increasing 30 by 200% gives 90. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 200% and then lowering the result by 200% ends at -90, because the second 200% is taken of a bigger number.
