How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 22 ÷ 100 = 0.22
  2. Multiply: 0.22 × 100 = 22
  3. Check: Work backwards: 22 ÷ 100 × 100 = 22%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/100 = part/100, so part = 22 × 100 ÷ 100 = 22. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =22%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

22 is the 22% share of 100. The remaining 78% is 78, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 22% off an item priced $100 saves $22, so you pay $78.

Adding and taking away 22%

Increasing 100 by 22% gives 122 and decreasing it by 22% gives 78. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 22% and then lowering the result by 22% ends at 95.16, because the second 22% is taken of a bigger number.
