How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 22 ÷ 100 = 0.22
- Multiply: 0.22 × 40 = 8.8
- Check: Work backwards: 8.8 ÷ 40 × 100 = 22%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/100 = part/40, so part = 22 × 40 ÷ 100 = 8.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
