How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 22 ÷ 100 = 0.22
- Multiply: 0.22 × 8 = 1.76
- Check: Work backwards: 1.76 ÷ 8 × 100 = 22%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/100 = part/8, so part = 22 × 8 ÷ 100 = 1.76. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =22%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.76 is the 22% share of 8. The remaining 78% is 6.24, and the two parts add back up to 8.
Discounts: 22% off an item priced $8 saves $1.76, so you pay $6.24.
Adding and taking away 22%
Increasing 8 by 22% gives 9.76 and decreasing it by 22% gives 6.24. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 22% and then lowering the result by 22% ends at 7.6128, because the second 22% is taken of a bigger number.
