How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
- Multiply: 0.23 × 30 = 6.9
- Check: Work backwards: 6.9 ÷ 30 × 100 = 23%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/30, so part = 23 × 30 ÷ 100 = 6.9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =23%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
6.9 is the 23% share of 30. The remaining 77% is 23.1, and the two parts add back up to 30.
Discounts: 23% off an item priced $30 saves $6.9, so you pay $23.1.
Adding and taking away 23%
Increasing 30 by 23% gives 36.9 and decreasing it by 23% gives 23.1. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 28.413, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 30% of 23. 23% of 30 and 30% of 23 are always equal (both are 23 × 30 ÷ 100 = 6.9), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
