How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 26 ÷ 100 = 0.26
- Multiply: 0.26 × 20 = 5.2
- Check: Work backwards: 5.2 ÷ 20 × 100 = 26%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 26/100 = part/20, so part = 26 × 20 ÷ 100 = 5.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =26%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.2 is the 26% share of 20. The remaining 74% is 14.8, and the two parts add back up to 20.
Discounts: 26% off an item priced $20 saves $5.2, so you pay $14.8.
Adding and taking away 26%
Increasing 20 by 26% gives 25.2 and decreasing it by 26% gives 14.8. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 26% and then lowering the result by 26% ends at 18.648, because the second 26% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 26. 26% of 20 and 20% of 26 are always equal (both are 26 × 20 ÷ 100 = 5.2), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
