How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 28 ÷ 100 = 0.28
- Multiply: 0.28 × 30 = 8.4
- Check: Work backwards: 8.4 ÷ 30 × 100 = 28%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 28/100 = part/30, so part = 28 × 30 ÷ 100 = 8.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =28%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
8.4 is the 28% share of 30. The remaining 72% is 21.6, and the two parts add back up to 30.
Discounts: 28% off an item priced $30 saves $8.4, so you pay $21.6.
Adding and taking away 28%
Increasing 30 by 28% gives 38.4 and decreasing it by 28% gives 21.6. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 28% and then lowering the result by 28% ends at 27.648, because the second 28% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 30% of 28. 28% of 30 and 30% of 28 are always equal (both are 28 × 30 ÷ 100 = 8.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
