How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 15 = 0.45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.45 ÷ 15 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/15, so part = 3 × 15 ÷ 100 = 0.45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.45 is the 3% share of 15. The remaining 97% is 14.55, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $15 saves $0.45, so you pay $14.55.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 15 by 3% gives 15.45 and decreasing it by 3% gives 14.55. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 14.9865, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
