How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 300 ÷ 100 = 3
  2. Multiply: 3 × 80 = 240
  3. Check: Work backwards: 240 ÷ 80 × 100 = 300%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 300/100 = part/80, so part = 300 × 80 ÷ 100 = 240. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =300%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

Because 300% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 80: it is 3 times 80.

Mark-ups: pricing an item at 300% of its $80 cost means selling it for $240.

Adding and taking away 300%

Increasing 80 by 300% gives 320. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 300% and then lowering the result by 300% ends at -640, because the second 300% is taken of a bigger number.
