How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 31 ÷ 100 = 0.31
  2. Multiply: 0.31 × 100 = 31
  3. Check: Work backwards: 31 ÷ 100 × 100 = 31%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 31/100 = part/100, so part = 31 × 100 ÷ 100 = 31. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =31%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

31 is the 31% share of 100. The remaining 69% is 69, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 31% off an item priced $100 saves $31, so you pay $69.

Adding and taking away 31%

Increasing 100 by 31% gives 131 and decreasing it by 31% gives 69. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 31% and then lowering the result by 31% ends at 90.39, because the second 31% is taken of a bigger number.
