How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 31 ÷ 100 = 0.31
  2. Multiply: 0.31 × 40 = 12.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12.4 ÷ 40 × 100 = 31%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 31/100 = part/40, so part = 31 × 40 ÷ 100 = 12.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =31%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12.4 is the 31% share of 40. The remaining 69% is 27.6, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 31% off an item priced $40 saves $12.4, so you pay $27.6.

Adding and taking away 31%

Increasing 40 by 31% gives 52.4 and decreasing it by 31% gives 27.6. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 31% and then lowering the result by 31% ends at 36.156, because the second 31% is taken of a bigger number.
