How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 31 ÷ 100 = 0.31
  2. Multiply: 0.31 × 60 = 18.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 18.6 ÷ 60 × 100 = 31%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 31/100 = part/60, so part = 31 × 60 ÷ 100 = 18.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =31%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

18.6 is the 31% share of 60. The remaining 69% is 41.4, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 31% off an item priced $60 saves $18.6, so you pay $41.4.

Adding and taking away 31%

Increasing 60 by 31% gives 78.6 and decreasing it by 31% gives 41.4. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 31% and then lowering the result by 31% ends at 54.234, because the second 31% is taken of a bigger number.
