How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 31 ÷ 100 = 0.31
  2. Multiply: 0.31 × 70 = 21.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 21.7 ÷ 70 × 100 = 31%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 31/100 = part/70, so part = 31 × 70 ÷ 100 = 21.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =31%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

21.7 is the 31% share of 70. The remaining 69% is 48.3, and the two parts add back up to 70.

Discounts: 31% off an item priced $70 saves $21.7, so you pay $48.3.

Adding and taking away 31%

Increasing 70 by 31% gives 91.7 and decreasing it by 31% gives 48.3. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 31% and then lowering the result by 31% ends at 63.273, because the second 31% is taken of a bigger number.
