How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 32 ÷ 100 = 0.32
- Multiply: 0.32 × 50 = 16
- Check: Work backwards: 16 ÷ 50 × 100 = 32%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 32/100 = part/50, so part = 32 × 50 ÷ 100 = 16. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =32%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
16 is the 32% share of 50. The remaining 68% is 34, and the two parts add back up to 50.
Discounts: 32% off an item priced $50 saves $16, so you pay $34.
Adding and taking away 32%
Increasing 50 by 32% gives 66 and decreasing it by 32% gives 34. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 32% and then lowering the result by 32% ends at 44.88, because the second 32% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 50% of 32. 32% of 50 and 50% of 32 are always equal (both are 32 × 50 ÷ 100 = 16), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
