How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
- Multiply: 0.33 × 30 = 9.9
- Check: Work backwards: 9.9 ÷ 30 × 100 = 33%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/30, so part = 33 × 30 ÷ 100 = 9.9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =33%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9.9 is the 33% share of 30. The remaining 67% is 20.1, and the two parts add back up to 30.
Discounts: 33% off an item priced $30 saves $9.9, so you pay $20.1.
Adding and taking away 33%
Increasing 30 by 33% gives 39.9 and decreasing it by 33% gives 20.1. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 26.733, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 30% of 33. 33% of 30 and 30% of 33 are always equal (both are 33 × 30 ÷ 100 = 9.9), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
