How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
  2. Multiply: 0.33 × 45 = 14.85
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14.85 ÷ 45 × 100 = 33%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/45, so part = 33 × 45 ÷ 100 = 14.85. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =33%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14.85 is the 33% share of 45. The remaining 67% is 30.15, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 33% off an item priced $45 saves $14.85, so you pay $30.15.

Adding and taking away 33%

Increasing 45 by 33% gives 59.85 and decreasing it by 33% gives 30.15. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 40.0995, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.
