How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 34 ÷ 100 = 0.34
- Multiply: 0.34 × 1 = 0.34
- Check: Work backwards: 0.34 ÷ 1 × 100 = 34%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 34/100 = part/1, so part = 34 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.34. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =34%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.34 is the 34% share of 1. The remaining 66% is 0.66, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 34% off an item priced $1 saves $0.34, so you pay $0.66.
Adding and taking away 34%
Increasing 1 by 34% gives 1.34 and decreasing it by 34% gives 0.66. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 34% and then lowering the result by 34% ends at 0.8844, because the second 34% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1% of 34. 34% of 1 and 1% of 34 are always equal (both are 34 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.34), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
