How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 35 = 12.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12.25 ÷ 35 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/35, so part = 35 × 35 ÷ 100 = 12.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*35. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12.25 is the 35% share of 35. The remaining 65% is 22.75, and the two parts add back up to 35.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $35 saves $12.25, so you pay $22.75.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 35 by 35% gives 47.25 and decreasing it by 35% gives 22.75. These do not cancel out: raising 35 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 30.7125, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
