How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
- Multiply: 0.35 × 5 = 1.75
- Check: Work backwards: 1.75 ÷ 5 × 100 = 35%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/5, so part = 35 × 5 ÷ 100 = 1.75. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =35%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.75 is the 35% share of 5. The remaining 65% is 3.25, and the two parts add back up to 5.
Discounts: 35% off an item priced $5 saves $1.75, so you pay $3.25.
Adding and taking away 35%
Increasing 5 by 35% gives 6.75 and decreasing it by 35% gives 3.25. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 4.3875, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
