How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 37 ÷ 100 = 0.37
- Multiply: 0.37 × 5 = 1.85
- Check: Work backwards: 1.85 ÷ 5 × 100 = 37%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 37/100 = part/5, so part = 37 × 5 ÷ 100 = 1.85. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =37%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.85 is the 37% share of 5. The remaining 63% is 3.15, and the two parts add back up to 5.
Discounts: 37% off an item priced $5 saves $1.85, so you pay $3.15.
Adding and taking away 37%
Increasing 5 by 37% gives 6.85 and decreasing it by 37% gives 3.15. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 37% and then lowering the result by 37% ends at 4.3155, because the second 37% is taken of a bigger number.
