How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 400 ÷ 100 = 4
- Multiply: 4 × 20 = 80
- Check: Work backwards: 80 ÷ 20 × 100 = 400%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 400/100 = part/20, so part = 400 × 20 ÷ 100 = 80. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =400%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 400% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 20: it is 4 times 20.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 400% of its $20 cost means selling it for $80.
Adding and taking away 400%
Increasing 20 by 400% gives 100. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 400% and then lowering the result by 400% ends at -300, because the second 400% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 400. 400% of 20 and 20% of 400 are always equal (both are 400 × 20 ÷ 100 = 80), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
