How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply: 0.41 × 40 = 16.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 16.4 ÷ 40 × 100 = 41%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/40, so part = 41 × 40 ÷ 100 = 16.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

16.4 is the 41% share of 40. The remaining 59% is 23.6, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 41% off an item priced $40 saves $16.4, so you pay $23.6.

Adding and taking away 41%

Increasing 40 by 41% gives 56.4 and decreasing it by 41% gives 23.6. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 33.276, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.
