How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 42 ÷ 100 = 0.42
- Multiply: 0.42 × 10 = 4.2
- Check: Work backwards: 4.2 ÷ 10 × 100 = 42%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 42/100 = part/10, so part = 42 × 10 ÷ 100 = 4.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
