How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 43 ÷ 100 = 0.43
- Multiply: 0.43 × 8 = 3.44
- Check: Work backwards: 3.44 ÷ 8 × 100 = 43%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 43/100 = part/8, so part = 43 × 8 ÷ 100 = 3.44. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =43%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.44 is the 43% share of 8. The remaining 57% is 4.56, and the two parts add back up to 8.
Discounts: 43% off an item priced $8 saves $3.44, so you pay $4.56.
Adding and taking away 43%
Increasing 8 by 43% gives 11.44 and decreasing it by 43% gives 4.56. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 43% and then lowering the result by 43% ends at 6.5208, because the second 43% is taken of a bigger number.
