How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 5 = 2.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.25 ÷ 5 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/5, so part = 45 × 5 ÷ 100 = 2.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.25 is the 45% share of 5. The remaining 55% is 2.75, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $5 saves $2.25, so you pay $2.75.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 5 by 45% gives 7.25 and decreasing it by 45% gives 2.75. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 3.9875, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
