How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 55 = 24.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 24.75 ÷ 55 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/55, so part = 45 × 55 ÷ 100 = 24.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

24.75 is the 45% share of 55. The remaining 55% is 30.25, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $55 saves $24.75, so you pay $30.25.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 55 by 45% gives 79.75 and decreasing it by 45% gives 30.25. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 43.8625, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
