How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 65 = 29.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 29.25 ÷ 65 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/65, so part = 45 × 65 ÷ 100 = 29.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

29.25 is the 45% share of 65. The remaining 55% is 35.75, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $65 saves $29.25, so you pay $35.75.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 65 by 45% gives 94.25 and decreasing it by 45% gives 35.75. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 51.8375, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
