How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 46 ÷ 100 = 0.46
- Multiply: 0.46 × 10 = 4.6
- Check: Work backwards: 4.6 ÷ 10 × 100 = 46%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 46/100 = part/10, so part = 46 × 10 ÷ 100 = 4.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =46%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.6 is the 46% share of 10. The remaining 54% is 5.4, and the two parts add back up to 10.
Discounts: 46% off an item priced $10 saves $4.6, so you pay $5.4.
Adding and taking away 46%
Increasing 10 by 46% gives 14.6 and decreasing it by 46% gives 5.4. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 46% and then lowering the result by 46% ends at 7.884, because the second 46% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 10% of 46. 46% of 10 and 10% of 46 are always equal (both are 46 × 10 ÷ 100 = 4.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
