How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 48 ÷ 100 = 0.48
  2. Multiply: 0.48 × 75 = 36
  3. Check: Work backwards: 36 ÷ 75 × 100 = 48%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 48/100 = part/75, so part = 48 × 75 ÷ 100 = 36. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =48%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

36 is the 48% share of 75. The remaining 52% is 39, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 48% off an item priced $75 saves $36, so you pay $39.

Adding and taking away 48%

Increasing 75 by 48% gives 111 and decreasing it by 48% gives 39. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 48% and then lowering the result by 48% ends at 57.72, because the second 48% is taken of a bigger number.
