How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 49 ÷ 100 = 0.49
  2. Multiply: 0.49 × 50 = 24.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 24.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 49%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 49/100 = part/50, so part = 49 × 50 ÷ 100 = 24.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =49%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

24.5 is the 49% share of 50. The remaining 51% is 25.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 49% off an item priced $50 saves $24.5, so you pay $25.5.

Adding and taking away 49%

Increasing 50 by 49% gives 74.5 and decreasing it by 49% gives 25.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 49% and then lowering the result by 49% ends at 37.995, because the second 49% is taken of a bigger number.
