How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 49 ÷ 100 = 0.49
  2. Multiply: 0.49 × 75 = 36.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 36.75 ÷ 75 × 100 = 49%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 49/100 = part/75, so part = 49 × 75 ÷ 100 = 36.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =49%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

36.75 is the 49% share of 75. The remaining 51% is 38.25, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 49% off an item priced $75 saves $36.75, so you pay $38.25.

Adding and taking away 49%

Increasing 75 by 49% gives 111.75 and decreasing it by 49% gives 38.25. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 49% and then lowering the result by 49% ends at 56.9925, because the second 49% is taken of a bigger number.
