How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 11 = 5.61
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.61 ÷ 11 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/11, so part = 51 × 11 ÷ 100 = 5.61. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*11. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.61 is the 51% share of 11. The remaining 49% is 5.39, and the two parts add back up to 11.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $11 saves $5.61, so you pay $5.39.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 11 by 51% gives 16.61 and decreasing it by 51% gives 5.39. These do not cancel out: raising 11 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 8.1389, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
