How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 25 = 12.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12.75 ÷ 25 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/25, so part = 51 × 25 ÷ 100 = 12.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12.75 is the 51% share of 25. The remaining 49% is 12.25, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $25 saves $12.75, so you pay $12.25.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 25 by 51% gives 37.75 and decreasing it by 51% gives 12.25. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 18.4975, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
