How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 26 = 13.26
  3. Check: Work backwards: 13.26 ÷ 26 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/26, so part = 51 × 26 ÷ 100 = 13.26. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*26. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

13.26 is the 51% share of 26. The remaining 49% is 12.74, and the two parts add back up to 26.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $26 saves $13.26, so you pay $12.74.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 26 by 51% gives 39.26 and decreasing it by 51% gives 12.74. These do not cancel out: raising 26 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 19.2374, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
