How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 65 = 33.15
  3. Check: Work backwards: 33.15 ÷ 65 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/65, so part = 51 × 65 ÷ 100 = 33.15. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

33.15 is the 51% share of 65. The remaining 49% is 31.85, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $65 saves $33.15, so you pay $31.85.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 65 by 51% gives 98.15 and decreasing it by 51% gives 31.85. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 48.0935, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
