How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 90 = 45.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 45.9 ÷ 90 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/90, so part = 51 × 90 ÷ 100 = 45.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

45.9 is the 51% share of 90. The remaining 49% is 44.1, and the two parts add back up to 90.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $90 saves $45.9, so you pay $44.1.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 90 by 51% gives 135.9 and decreasing it by 51% gives 44.1. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 66.591, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
