How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 52 ÷ 100 = 0.52
  2. Multiply: 0.52 × 100 = 52
  3. Check: Work backwards: 52 ÷ 100 × 100 = 52%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 52/100 = part/100, so part = 52 × 100 ÷ 100 = 52. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =52%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

52 is the 52% share of 100. The remaining 48% is 48, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 52% off an item priced $100 saves $52, so you pay $48.

Adding and taking away 52%

Increasing 100 by 52% gives 152 and decreasing it by 52% gives 48. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 52% and then lowering the result by 52% ends at 72.96, because the second 52% is taken of a bigger number.
