How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 52 ÷ 100 = 0.52
  2. Multiply: 0.52 × 15 = 7.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.8 ÷ 15 × 100 = 52%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 52/100 = part/15, so part = 52 × 15 ÷ 100 = 7.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =52%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.8 is the 52% share of 15. The remaining 48% is 7.2, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 52% off an item priced $15 saves $7.8, so you pay $7.2.

Adding and taking away 52%

Increasing 15 by 52% gives 22.8 and decreasing it by 52% gives 7.2. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 52% and then lowering the result by 52% ends at 10.944, because the second 52% is taken of a bigger number.
