How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 56 ÷ 100 = 0.56
  2. Multiply: 0.56 × 55 = 30.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 30.8 ÷ 55 × 100 = 56%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 56/100 = part/55, so part = 56 × 55 ÷ 100 = 30.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =56%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

30.8 is the 56% share of 55. The remaining 44% is 24.2, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 56% off an item priced $55 saves $30.8, so you pay $24.2.

Adding and taking away 56%

Increasing 55 by 56% gives 85.8 and decreasing it by 56% gives 24.2. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 56% and then lowering the result by 56% ends at 37.752, because the second 56% is taken of a bigger number.
