How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 56 ÷ 100 = 0.56
- Multiply: 0.56 × 60 = 33.6
- Check: Work backwards: 33.6 ÷ 60 × 100 = 56%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 56/100 = part/60, so part = 56 × 60 ÷ 100 = 33.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =56%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
33.6 is the 56% share of 60. The remaining 44% is 26.4, and the two parts add back up to 60.
Discounts: 56% off an item priced $60 saves $33.6, so you pay $26.4.
Adding and taking away 56%
Increasing 60 by 56% gives 93.6 and decreasing it by 56% gives 26.4. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 56% and then lowering the result by 56% ends at 41.184, because the second 56% is taken of a bigger number.
