How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 57 ÷ 100 = 0.57
  2. Multiply: 0.57 × 100 = 57
  3. Check: Work backwards: 57 ÷ 100 × 100 = 57%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 57/100 = part/100, so part = 57 × 100 ÷ 100 = 57. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =57%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

57 is the 57% share of 100. The remaining 43% is 43, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 57% off an item priced $100 saves $57, so you pay $43.

Adding and taking away 57%

Increasing 100 by 57% gives 157 and decreasing it by 57% gives 43. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 57% and then lowering the result by 57% ends at 67.51, because the second 57% is taken of a bigger number.
