How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58
  2. Multiply: 0.58 × 100 = 58
  3. Check: Work backwards: 58 ÷ 100 × 100 = 58%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 58/100 = part/100, so part = 58 × 100 ÷ 100 = 58. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =58%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

58 is the 58% share of 100. The remaining 42% is 42, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 58% off an item priced $100 saves $58, so you pay $42.

Adding and taking away 58%

Increasing 100 by 58% gives 158 and decreasing it by 58% gives 42. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 58% and then lowering the result by 58% ends at 66.36, because the second 58% is taken of a bigger number.
