How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58
  2. Multiply: 0.58 × 30 = 17.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17.4 ÷ 30 × 100 = 58%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 58/100 = part/30, so part = 58 × 30 ÷ 100 = 17.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =58%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17.4 is the 58% share of 30. The remaining 42% is 12.6, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Discounts: 58% off an item priced $30 saves $17.4, so you pay $12.6.

Adding and taking away 58%

Increasing 30 by 58% gives 47.4 and decreasing it by 58% gives 12.6. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 58% and then lowering the result by 58% ends at 19.908, because the second 58% is taken of a bigger number.
